Mark Mathis

Mark Mathis is a native of Bardstown, Kentucky, and represents the third generation of the Mathis family at Mago Construction Company. Upon graduating from Bardstown High School, Mark continued his education at the University of Kentucky where he joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Mark went on to law school at the University of Louisville, graduating in 1978 with his Juris Doctor. Thereafter, Mark successfully passed the Kentucky bar exam and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association, of which he remains a licensed member.

Mark returned home to Bardstown and practiced law with a local firm: Fulton, Hubbard & Hubbard. In 1983, Mark joined his father, Dinwiddie Mathis, and uncle, Fabian Mathis, at Mago Construction Company — the “Ma” representing the Mathis family’s ownership and “Go” representing the same for the Geoghegan family. In the following years, and with no familial succession for the Geoghegan family, Mark helped facilitate the Mathis family’s purchase of the Geoghegan family’s interests in the company. To this day, Mago Construction proudly remains family-owned and operated. Over the years, Mark maintained active involvement in the industry and with its associations, serving as a director on each of the Kentucky Highway Industries association boards. In addition to his board service, Mark served as Chair of the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association (KCSA) (1995); President of the Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky (PAIKY) (1997, 2004, 2015); and Chair of the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors (KAHC) (2006). Following in his father’s footsteps, Mark represented Kentucky as the state’s appointee to the National Asphalt Paving Association for several years. Additionally, Mark served as a Trustee of the Kentucky Associated General Contractors Self-Insured Fund (AGCSIF). An avid runner, Mark became the first person from Nelson County to run in the Boston Marathon (1982, 1984).

Locally, Mark contributes his time and talents by serving as a Director of the Wilson and Muir Bank and Trust Company Board, as Chair of the Bardstown Board of Adjustments, and as a nearly forty year tenured Director of the Joint City-County Planning Commission. Mark was inducted into the Bardstown High School Athletics Hall of Fame for his years on the track and field team In 2021, Mark received the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award, as a testament to his lifelong contributions to the local business community. In all circles, both professional and personal, Mark is revered for his stoicism and sharp intellect along with his humility and genuine care for others.

Mark resides in Bardstown with his wife of 38 years, Debi Mathis. He is a proud “girl dad” to his three daughters Nika, Anya, and Aria. Mark is the CEO of Mago Construction and works alongside his eldest daughter, Nika.
