INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS)

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program leverages strategic planning and novel communication technologies to improve highway safety and efficiency. Researchers evaluate ITS and Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) technologies and help plan, implement, and manage related projects. The program promotes widespread adoption of safety best practices, evaluates information technologies for work zones and traffic incident management (TIM), and delivers TIM training to first responders.

featured project

Optimizing Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Investments and Activities to Improve Safety and Increase Revenue Collections

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet owns and maintains 14 commercial vehicle enforcement facilities. As in many states, Kentucky has experienced a decline of personnel trained to operate weigh stations which adversely impacts safety enforcement and revenue collection.  Due to the construction of new routes three CVE facilities would be impacted. ITS researchers evaluated the three facilities taking into account the level of compliance with tax related and safety regulations. The guidance developed in this study can be applied to all weigh station facilities to make decisions about whether a facility should be closed, replaced, or transitioned to remote monitoring.
