Project Management Mentoring for the Design and Development of Highway Projects
Each year, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) project managers (PMs) are tasked with delivering over 600 projects. And with staff in short supply, new — and even seasoned — PMs can feel overwhelmed by intimidating workloads, juggling multiple projects, and trying to figure out how best to apply effective project management concepts, tools, and strategies. Because attrition and retirements have eroded KYTC’s institutional memory, PMs have few options to seek advice and mentorship when they find themselves struggling or needing reassurance.
To strengthen its project management capabilities, the Cabinet has asked the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) to offer project management mentoring services. As part of this initiative, PMs who are just starting out or who need assistance can access KTC staff who can provide mentorship throughout design and project development.
The KTC staff leading this initiative have years of highway project management experience and can provide dependable, trustworthy advice on many topics, including:
- Roles and Responsibilities of PMs
- The Highway Project Development Process (Including Red Flags and High-Risk Items)
- Best Practices for Project Scoping, Cost Management, and Time Management
- Building the Right Project Team and Managing Consultants
- Coordinating with Subject-Matter Experts and Central Office Divisions
- Lessons Learned in Project Management
